Spring Break 2014 ~ Kid's rooms renovation!

Dave and I got a little "vacation" from the kids this week.  Although I wouldn't call it a relaxing, put-up-your-feet-up, sleep-in type of break.  All four kids got the privilege of going to Grandpa and Grandma Hardinger's house in Mason City starting Tuesday night of Spring Break this week.  Grandma Jo picked them up Tuesday evening and used our van to take them to Mason City.  I hear she planned the week in advance, prepared meals ahead of time, rearranged things in the house so no little hands could destroy things, shopped for food prior to their visit, planned out activities, and was "on her A-game" handling the kids all week.  My dad also didn't work Wednesday and Thursday to help out.

The reason they all went to MC was because Dave and I had a big surprise planned.  We've been planning since the end of January for their room renovations.  Since Eli is officially moved in with Calvin, it was time to finally get their rooms done.  It's been "musical beds" for the last 8 years, not really knowing who was really sleeping in who's room - and whoever was the baby at the time got the guest room with the crib.  It is comforting and settling to know we will have a girl’s room and a boy’s room – and 2 of each.  I love how the Lord planned out our family this way.  We feel so…balanced…haha.

Anyway.  We asked our dear friend and expert designer Kim Erisman to jump on board helping us with this project.  She enthusiastically agreed and we quickly got to work pinning ideas on two Pinterest boards organized – one for girls, one for boys.  We had a little powwow meeting to discuss kid’s interests and needs for their rooms and she took off pinning ideas.  Once we went a direction with décor and furniture, it was obvious that there wasn’t room for desks in the kid’s rooms so we decided to move them to the basement play area.  This worked out seamlessly and the kids love the desks in the basement.

This allowed room for more play things and dedicated seating areas for reading.  A week or two of planning went by and she had the whole arrangement of the rooms set and we started ordering things.  Boxes and boxes began appearing on our front porch, and we made every effort to keep all these deliveries a surprise.  It sure helped that many of them arrived when the older two were at school!  Vanessa noticed boxes, but thankfully, she is distractable. J  I stored many boxes in the basement, some in the garage.

Dave had to make a run to the Ikea store in Minneapolis to get the bulk of things we planned to put in their rooms.  This required him to take the van emptied of all the seats so he had room to bring everything home.  I used the car to transport the 4 kids for two days.  That was interesting.
The boy’s room inspiration came from Calvin’s love for all things outer space.  He’s been obsessed with the idea of rockets blasting to the moon, the order of planets, the idea that the planets circle around the sun, astronauts, etc…you name it, he loves it.  He acts like he’s a rocket all the time, blasting off from things, whether it is running or jumping.  This was an easy “theme” take off with.
The girl’s room didn’t have a theme, but Kim created a beautiful color scheme of bright pink, orange, yellow, white, and black.  It is dazzling!  She found a perfect duvet cover with all these colors that looked like clouds, rain drops, and the sun.  We went with this scheme and took a hot pink to the walls, and balanced it out with white furniture, white curtains, a black rug with white dots, orange chairs, and white cloud corkboards on the wall.

Something else the Lord worked out was the use of our friend Tony’s pickup truck.  Tony needed a car to take two other guys with him to Ohio for the week to serve at a homeless mission, so we decided to trade our car for his truck for the week.  He has a little pick up truck with a front bench seat only.

The actual work week accomplishing all these things was grueling.  We didn’t really have an accurate idea of how much work these rooms were going to be.  In hindsight, of course, it was all absolutely worth it.  We shopped for some things to build the boy’s climbing wall at Home Depot on Tuesday night after the kids left.  It was the Lord’s working that it just so happened we had a vehicle capable enough to bring home three sheets of plywood.  The little car we would have wouldn’t have worked.  Tuesday evening It got too late to work much, so we did a little (Dave brushed the first coat of polyurethane on the plywood and Rachel helped me tape off some of the boy’s room for paint prep)…but the rest we picked up the next morning.

On Wednesday, I got to work painting.  Dave disassembled the baby crib and worked out cutting wood pieces for the planets in the boy’s room and prepared the wood for the climbing wall.  He had to run to the store and get one more piece of plywood because the room was a little longer than 12 feet.  It took me all day to paint the two rooms.  Each room got two coats of paint.  Kim came over in the evening to help out and helped me move furniture to the basement, carry rugs upstairs (dead body rugs! So heavy!), assemble an intricate pink chandelier, and assembled the two orange swivel egg chairs.

Thursday morning we got up at 7:30, got ready for the day, and made a run to Tandem tire for a quick errand, had some coffee and a muffin at Cup of Joe while we waited for an hour.  We got back to work at 9:30 am.  Dave hung the pink chandelier.  Then he worked on putting up the finished plywood for the climbing wall.  It was an all day project – requiring little cutting here and there, and needing to run to the store and get some pieces to connect the last 13 inch piece because there was no stud in place to screw it to.   He got some metal connectors and had to bring the wood all the way back to the garage to connect them – the carpet was too soft.  He used a sledge hammer to get the four connecters in place.  He said he arms were rubber after that project.  What he thought would take an hour took 7 hours!

Thursday I worked on assembling three shelving units and the girl’s bunk bed.  Carrying the heavy boxes upstairs was no simple task either. My fingers were pretty shot from all the turning of the allen wrenches for hours.  Thursday during the day I took a few hours to go help celebrate a friend’s 40th birthday from 11 am-1pm. I picked up a cake on the way and met at McDonald’s in Evansdale.  Since it was spring break we picked a place where kids could play.  It was strange to be there among friends with kids and not have mine with me!   Kim and I made a run to Joanne Fabrics after the little birthday party to choose the fabric for the ceiling décor in the girl’s room.  She chose a really classy pretty black dot sheer fabric.  When I got back I kept assembling.  The bunk beds were finally together, shelves in place.  Dave put mattresses on the bunks.  It was starting to come together!  Rachel, bless her heart, came over to help as well.  While I was busy assembling furniture, she did some research and got to work arranging the climbing wall holds where they should be.  Which ones work best in certain places, etc.  She mapped out on paper and traced where they should go and taped the paper to the wall.  She said, “Ok, by 10:30 I should go.”  10:30 came and went.  She was done mapping the pieces and was itching to screw some into the wall.  She put some on the wall and it became addictive, ha!   Midnight came, and I said, “you gotta go!”  So she did one more hold and then went home.

Friday was a “wake up early and get busy day” as well!  I finished screwing the climbing wall holds on and was done by 10 am.  Then I started assembling the boy’s bunk beds.  Dave and I had scheduled time to take Rachel and her assistant Michelle out to lunch earlier in the week, so we kept that commitment and met them for lunch at 11:45 at a restaurant downtown Waterloo called El Patron – and all enjoyed delicious Mexican food.  The weather was beautiful, a sunny 50 degrees.  I had to wear my flip flops.  We got home at 1:30 pm and kept working.

Kim came by that afternoon and worked on painting the wood edges of the planets.  She stuck the decals on.  Max and Chloe hung out, Miss Chloe took a nap, Max played legos and some ipad games.  Kids got tired.  Kim left, and offered to come back later that evening.  She came at 7:30 and stayed til 1 am!  She was determined to see the final results. We put rugs in place, worked on planets, painted edges black, Dave cut the wood for the sun for the third time.  He escaped a potential bad injury by avoiding a drill bit flying off his router.  I got the bunks in boys room assembled.  Looking great!  Put beds and astronaut bedding on.  So very super cool!

It was about 4:30 when I got a phone call from mom wondering how things were going.  I did not see an end in sight for the day.  I knew we needed more time.  Rachel bravely and happily volunteered to keep the kids overnight so we could use the rest of the day to work.  My dad was driving home from a dental meeting in Des Moines and offered to re-route his trip to Cedar Falls to help Rachel with the kids.  I seriously have the best family ever!  Will never take them for granted!  Mom drove them to Rachel’s house about 8 pm – dad swung by our house to grab air mattresses, a portable crib, and sleeping bags for the kids.  Rachel reports they were so ready for bed and slept well.
Dave explored the attic a few times to see what he needed to support the hanging elements in each room.  The two hanging chairs especially needed good support for the boy’s room.  A run to Menards and he was ready.  Hung up play canopies in each room! Chairs were hung up!

I started mounting hardware on walls to hang curtains.  This took me a long time.  Not my strongest suit – drilling holes and putting anchors in the walls.  I figured out my drill bit was too small after ruining several anchors.

Kim and I figured out girl’s ceiling black fabric project by measuring, finding center, cutting fabric, screwing in little hooks, I sewed fabric with machine (it nearly broke and Kim fixed it! I’ve never seen my bobbin holder pieces come apart), time just flew out the window as we worked, we got it hung up, and it looks absolutely fantastic.

We then applied growth chart decals to the wood pieces.

Midnight was right about when we started hanging planets and porthole decals.  I think we finished at 1 am.  Happy faces, sighs of relief, sore muscles and all, everything looked amazing.
I only loaded the dishwasher once the whole week.  We ordered Chinese food one day and pizza the next.  Weird!
So Rachel and my dad brought the kids over on Saturday morning.  We picked 10:30.  We both had to work frantically to clean up.  There was garbage, cardboard, assembly instructions, and tools EVERYWHERE.   I mean everywhere.  The garage is still a disaster, but the upstairs got nicely cleaned up.  We still had one more little project to do, and that was to hang the growth charts on the wall behind each door.

Dave finished screwing the last one in place at 10:28 am.  The kids pulled up into the driveway at 10:32 am.  Yeah.  Nothing like cutting it close!

We greeted them in the garage and Violet and Calvin were grabbing at the door handles waiting to open the doors and run towards us while my dad was pulling the van into the garage.  Calvin ran to me and gave me a big strong monster hug.  Violet ran to daddy, did the same, and we switched.  Vanessa emerged wanting a big hug too.  She snuggled next to my neck and said, “I missed you!!”  Eli came walking around towards me, stopped and stared for 10 seconds or so, then gave me a little closed mouth smile and walked towards me and I picked him up.  He didn’t want me to put him down. Violet was anxious to show us a binder she made with pictures and captions of what she did at grandma’s house.  Calvin walked into the house and immediately said, “I smell paint!!!  Did you paint our rooms?”  haa!!

My dad unloaded the van, we all got acquainted again and listened to stories of their adventures to the library, the gym, and their time with Grandma and Grandpa.  Violet tried running to her room to put the leotard grandma had gotten for her but we had to restrain her from busting into the room early.
The excitement settled down and we decided it was time to show them their rooms.  Dave told them we had a surprise for them and we headed upstairs.  Rachel was ahead of us with my camera on video mode.  Dave asked them all to close their eyes and we all walked in – and asked them to open their eyes.  It was a mix of awe and excitement.  Violet said, “whoa!! Where did you get all this stuff????” then they started jumping around and talking fast.  Violet said the pink light looks like something in a castle.  Calvin said “look! You can get lost in these chairs!” putting the cover over him.  Vanessa had a big smile and just walked around.  They then climbed into their beds, grinned, and just explored the room with awe.  Calvin realized something big was about to happen as we were about to reveal the BOY’S room – and started jumping with excitement to see that space.  We then showed the kids the boy’s room in the same fashion – eyes closed, then open.  Same reactions – lots of excitement, bouncing around, awe, screaming.  Eli walked right over to the hanging chairs and climbed right in, leaned his head on the side of the fabric chair, and smiled.  He stayed there for a little while.  So super cute.  The realizations of what was all in the room unfolded slowly.  Calvin then realized his bedding looked like he was an astronaut.  He climbed under his sheets and sighed happily.  The three older kids tried the climbing wall, hung in the chairs, went into the rocket canopy and blasted off to the moon.  Dad was snapping photos, Rachel was videotaping, kids were going crazy.  Adults resorted to the hallway between the rooms and the kids just went NUTS.  In and out of each other’s rooms, trying the chairs, climbing the bunks, in the canopies, etc….it lasted a very long time.  Dave and I felt very happy and satisfied knowing it was all done.  Our muscles are still aching and our eyes are tired from not sleeping enough.  But ibuprofen takes off the edge, and coffee helps us walk.

I can’t thank my family enough for helping.  Mom and dad, your help with the kids was amazing.  I know they all had a great time, and your efforts planning and getting ready for the week and taking care of them for 4 days was superb!  Rachel, your help with the rooms late into the night and your efforts to care for them Friday night and Saturday morning was the ticket to finishing with a bang.  Kim, your planning and designing expertise is unmatched.  Your help executing was much appreciated and very necessary!  You hit the nail on the head for every aspect of the kid’s rooms and we thank you very much for your help, there is no way we could have pulled this off without your help too.

Sooo…for photos!  Here goes!

Vanessa's take on the bologna saying

Vanessa tried the "you're full of bologna!" saying, but instead she said, "Dad! You have a bologna in your mouth!"

and now after typing that word, I'm wondering why in the world it is spelled that way.

"How do they know so much about hands??"

When viewing the cover on this book that was Calvin's first thought. I love the windows into the minds of kids. So funny!

*sorry the image wasn't available - it was a photo uploaded from my phone that must not have worked.  This is the image of the book he looked at:

Calvin thinks he can feel himself grow on birthdays

Yesterday while driving home from school, out of the blue, Calvin says, "Mom, when its my next birthday, I am going to sleep with my hand on my head so I can feel myself grow bigger."  :)

Calvin told us he prayed to receive Jesus as his Savior

Yesterday I was dealing with a situation with Calvin and discipline.  I had to separate him from the rest of the kids for awhile because of his behavior, and Dave was talking to him while he was separated from the group.  I don't even remember what the offense was.

Dave was explaining to Calvin that once someone receives the gift of salvation he also has the power of the Spirit with in the person to help make better choices.

Calvin then told Dave that "sometime after Christmas" he prayed in his sunday school class to ask Jesus to be his Savior.  He explained that the lesson he was taught was about the reality of hell and how God provided Jesus as a gift to take our sins away so we don't have to go there.  He said he squirmed and was uncomfortable thinking about hell and decided to ask Jesus to be his Savior.  He said he did it quietly and didn't tell his teacher about it either.  He didn't tell us either.  So I'm not really sure when it happened, but I could ask his SS teacher, Doriece.  She said she soberly teaches that lesson every year to the 5 and 6 yr olds and knows its a powerful one, not really one that is lighthearted and happy to hear about, but also very important.  I'm thankful for her dedication in teaching as she's done for years.

Calvin was serious in explaining his decision.  I told him angels in heaven celebrated and had a party for him because he accepted Jesus' gift of salvation.  He said, "really? A party? just for ME!?" :)

Calvin is a thoughtful boy who really loves to please.  If he knows someone has a favorite thing he'll go out of his way to find a way to please that person. I'm often the recipient of such gifts.  He knows I love chocolate. He opened a box of his valentine candy that was 5 chocolates last night (I was not home at the time)...gave a piece to everyone in the family, and saved one piece of chocolate for me.  He was so excited to run to my bedroom this morning and tell me about it and give that one saved piece of chocolate.  What a sweetie.

Another little lesson Calvin picked up a few weeks ago was that you can't ask for a gift back.  When you give a gift, you can no longer have it back.  He gave Violet some money from his jar and later asked for it back, and when she said no, he got very upset.
Dave illustrated the lesson and said "well, then I'm going to ask for your Christmas presents back."  and he realized that since we had given them to him, we can't ask for them back.

He had an overnight date with Aunt Rachel and asked him about things in her house.  One thing in the guest room where he slept was a decor item and he asked her where she got it.  She told him someone gave it to her as a gift.  He said, "then they can't ask for it back, it belongs to you now!"

oh Vanessa. "Squishy" does not have three syllables

Vanessa ran up to me and used both hands to push on me from behind.  I was filling up a glass of water at the refrigerator at the time and she says, "Mom! Your butt is Skuh-WOOSH-eee!"
*sigh*

Eli climbed out of his crib and some new words

Calvin woke me up the morning it happened.  Eli apparently got out of his crib and took off out of the room and started going downstairs.  He managed to keep his blanket and paci with him.  It was 7:25 am!

Good thing I kept the crib tent from when Calvin was an adventurous toddler.  He climbed out much earlier and the crib tent saved my mommy-life.  Eli is now bound to his bed. :)  He seems to like it.  He giggles when he goes to bed now.

I keep thinking I should go to the most recent post about Eli and add to the words he is saying now but the time frame wouldn't be accurate.  He started saying, "oh wow" and "caca!" for his truck.  I'm not sure how that happened. But when I got him out of bed this morning he was yelling "caca!" and only wanted a little tan truck he likes to play with.

He constantly says "mom! mom! mom!" and it reminds me of this!

Eli - first time eating with spoon

This may be a common theme in my writings with the kids when they get to this stage.  I don't really like it.  Feeding themselves with a spoon...ugh...the feelings make me cringe.  Food spilled, oatmeal in crevices I never knew about.  But it has to happen.  Sure, he's been "feeding himself" with finger foods like noodles and raisins for awhile now, but using utensils, that's a new thing.  I let him eat banana chunks I put on a fork for him a few days ago which he liked, but he didn't poke them himself - I'll work on that part later.  Spoon for now!

Last night I made peas and macaroni and cheese for the kids.  I put a bowl in front of him and let him hold a spoon.  I put a bib on him (he never wears bibs..not sure why...the other kids all wore them until they were 3.  I guess I never bother with it anymore).  I let him scoop a bite of noodles with my assistance directing which way to scoop and which way to put it his mouth.  He then tried on his own.  Scooped like a pro, got it his mouth like I showed him, and he went on to take a few more bites until almost all the noodles were gone.  I guess I underestimated my little guy.  Violet said, "Well mom! That sure makes YOUR life easier!" haa!

Vanessa's double vision

Vanessa has done this twice in the last few days.  It is so funny to me.

She presses her face close to mine and says in a quiet and raspy voice, "You have three eyes."  then she presses closer so our noses our touching, and says "You have one eye."  Then giggles because I laugh.

She did this on Sunday morning during church and again today during the day.  I know she's seeing double vision, for some reason this makes me laugh.

Eli - 18 months (ok, almost 20 months)

I'm behind blogging about Eli.  I meant to get his 18 month check up done on time, I was a month late.  I also meant to write about him when he was 18 months old, but now he's 2 months past it, he's changed already since then.  I wrote down a list of things he says and a couple weeks went by and I added 6 things to the list.  I can't keep up with this kid! Any of the kids, for that matter.  :P

Anyway.  I am now finally doing this so I can take it off my to-do list.

I really do love blogging.  I love reading posts from the past and remembering life when it was different.  But lately blogging has felt more like a chore because I can't pack it in to my day.  As I sit here, the living room has a trail of 20 books across it that Vanessa created so she "wouldn't step in the lava" from one room to the couch.  They're not put away yet.  There is laundry to flip around, dishes to wash, and tons of papers to file.  Dave is also out of town and school was canceled today so its been a "stuck in the house" feeling kind of day.  Not sure what all this has to do with Eli being a year and a half old but anyway, I digress...

Eli is quickly growing out of "being a baby" and into a full blown toddler (ok not true...he's totally NOT a baby anymore and IS a toddler...c'mon mama...admit it).  He runs constantly from place to place, unless he is strapped to the high chair or in my arms.  He's still sleeping in the crib in Calvin's room.  I should start calling it "the boy's room" because that's what it is now.  He still loves his paci and his blankies.  He's chewed up the tips of three pacis in the last week though, I think he's finding the powers of his new sharp canine teeth.  Funny timing.  All I could find a few months ago were pink pacifiers from when Vanessa was a baby and Dave was tired of seeing his little boy suck on a pink paci (I really didn't care!) so on a run to Target around Christmas time we picked up a couple new packages of blue ones.  This meant I had 4 new pacis for Eli.  And now I'm down to one new blue one and a pink one floating around the house again...just can't win that battle I guess.

He seems to have a growing sense of humor.  He loves any game that involves hiding and then suddenly appearing.  Peek a boo with hands/blankets/doors/boxes...anything goes in that department.  He likes when I say "I'm going to get you!" he will immediately run away laughing. The other kids picked up on this and do it to Eli too.  Sometimes he gets trampled.  Violet tends to "mother him" by picking him up and hugging him if he gets upset.  He tries to communicate with words but a lot of what he says is mumbo-jumbo, but he is very expressive and points and babbles all at the same time so most of the time its possible to figure out what he wants.

I still put him right in bed with a dark room and a fan and he generally goes to sleep before the other 3 kids, then Calvin slips in quietly and goes to bed after we finish up reading stories/Bible.  Eli has started to protest the bedtime a little by standing up and bouncing in his crib or purposely dropping his stuff on the floor.  But overall he goes to bed well.  Sometimes he cries in the night.  Sometimes we hear him, sometimes we help him, sometimes we let him be.  If he goes on long enough we do so Calvin doesn't get woken up.

He's moved to one nap a day now.  I try get him to sleep by either 11 after a snack or if he's not ready then, definitely by 12 or 12:30 after his lunch.

Here's his list of verbals:

- Wat dis! (watch this!)
- one, two, twee
- what dat? (what's that?)
- no
- what?
- der mom (there mom)  --> usually said after he gives me something
- done (said when high chair when he's done eating)
- more
- tanks mom (thanks mom)
- mouw (milk)
- Eyi (his name)
- dada (says this sometimes when wanting me to hold him, don't know why)
- owie
- ba-dee (blankee)
- gumbee (gummy)
- he mumbles what he thinks are letters when he hears the alphabet song
- BIOLET! (Violet!) ---> he yells for her all the time!  He doesn't have words for Calvin or Vanessa (yet).  **update a week later. He can now say "calbin!"
- a-doo-doo!
- he'll copy "oh-trotro" somehow - like "oh-tow-tow"

He likes:

- when I count to three and toss him in the air.
- playing with circular magnets when I change his diaper. He knows that its time to put them back when diaper changing time is over.
- turning off and on light switches when I hold him (he notices that stuff now)
- putting hot wheels cars on a little hot wheels track if Calvin is kind enough to let him play with it
- playing with cups in the kitchen cabinet where kid cups are stored.
- spinning on bounce n spin zebra
- climbing up on chairs and finding markers to pull caps off of
- climbing up on chairs by legos and playing with them
- being tickled.  His little grunty giggle is great!
- tromping around with my shoes on
- oatmeal, eggs/toast, cold cereal with milk, peanut butter and jelly, raisins (have to cut him off of these), cheese sticks, steamed carrots, pancakes with peanut butter
- taco soup
- cut up chicken nuggets
- cheese crackers
- smoothies (this is when I sneak in a banana)
- white string cheese sticks
- noodles
- nutrigrain bars (I save these for Sunday morning)

 He does not like:
- bread
- bananas
- burritos
- shredded cheese or cheese cut off a block.  Apparently he likes only string cheese sticks that are individually wrapped.

I know!  He won't just eat a hunk of bread like a dinner roll or something like that.  Toast with stuff on it all cut up, maybe.  But not a piece of soft bread.

At his doctor check up, he got one shot (second Hep A).  He weighs 28 lbs 12 oz, 33" tall and 19 1/2" head.
I was surprised to have Vanessa weighed at that same visit and she was only 33.  I thought they were closer in weight.

Violet's 8th birthday celebrations

Violet's preferences for the day:
breakfast: #8 pancake
lunch: mac n cheese for lunch
dinner: chicken taco soup with tortilla chips and funfetti birthday cake!

We celebrated Violet's birthday on January 25, the Saturday after her birthday.  She woke up to purple streamers over her doorway.
I made fun pancakes and created a number 8 for her.  The night before we cut out a cardboard 8 and she wanted to decorate it with me, so we used markers and stickers and made one side rainbows and the other side a "world of stickers".

Most of the morning and through lunch we stayed at our house.  I baked her a funfetti cake with white frosting and a pink sparkly 8.
For a fun activity, we used a loaf of thawed out bread dough to split among the kids and they got freedom to create whatever shape they wanted.  It was hard for them not to play with it like playdough, but instead they had to shape and create a thing to let sit for awhile and rise, then bake when ready.

Violet made a teddy bear she named "Pooh Bear", Calvin made a big donut shape thing that Dave helped him put sprinkles inside a groove in the middle.  Vanessa wanted to make a snowman.  The sprinkles got everywhere and spilled on the floor!

We let the bread rise, then baked it.  It blew up so huge!  Violet put honey on her bear and ate some of it.  Calvin splattered honey all over his and ate the entire thing.  I think Vanessa ate the head off her snowman but left the rest.  I put together the soup in the crock pot.

Kids all enjoyed mac n cheese and broccoli for lunch and then the plan was to go ice skating at Young Arena from 3-5 pm.  Rachel joined us at the skating rink!  Dave sat back with Eli watching (he was still wearing his walking boot at the time, keeping weight off his healing foot) and took a bunch of pictures.  Rachel and I helped Violet and Calvin skate.  Vanessa wanted to skate too so we took turns pushing her around the ice.  Violet learned how to skate better and could skate around on her own some.  It was a really fun time!  Dave was sitting on the sidelines with a very grumpy Eli but managed to take a lot of pictures.  Violet seemed to really enjoy the time.  When the two hours was over we took our skates off and watched the zamboni machine clean off the scraped up ice and make it slick again.

We came home to a yummy smelling house and ate the chicken taco soup with tortilla chips - then we lit the candles, blew the candles out with the happy birthday song, and she opened her presents!

Rachel got her a "Super Cute Activity book", scratch-off black art book, big set of twist-up colored pencils, Mom and dad gave her a cute zebra/pink dress, her own roll of scotch tape, V8 fusion juice (Violet is EIGHT!), and cat's cradle; Grandma Jo sent along more cotton loops to make potholders with, Grandma Martha sent a rainbow loom to make rubber bracelets with.

We also wanted to watch The Jungle Book but couldn't find it on the roku and it wasn't available to rent, so we watched Despicable Me instead.

What a great birthday!  We love watching Violet grow up!!

For fun I "interviewed" Violet.  I asked her these questions and I recorded her answers.

1. Who is your favorite person in the whole wide world?

My family!

2. What is your favorite color?

pink

3. What is your favorite thing to watch on TV?

Hmm. Probably...I have a lot of favorite ones.  Maybe, um, I'll say Woody Woodpecker.  He's hilarious.

4. What's your favorite thing to wear?

Oh boy.  I think the zebra pattern dress.  And swimsuits!

5. What sport do you like best? Or favorite thing to play?

Favorite sport is ice skating.  My favorite thing to play is helicopter.  You swing a rope in a circle and everyone jumps over it.  We play it in gym at school, and at recess.

6. What is your favorite song?

Oh boy. Hmm. Does the Interlude count?

7. What's your favorite breakfast cereal?

Life.

8. Who is your best friend?

Uhh, I have a lot of best friends.  Selah.  Can I say three?  Selah, Alexis, and Casey.

9. What do you want to be when you grow up?

Ooh!  A doctor so people don't get sick!

10.  What is your favorite book?

Violet's cardboard train

I helped Violet make this - she saw a pic of this in an arts and crafts book and wanted to make her baby the driver.  Its so cute!

Today is Violet's 8th birthday!

She had school today, so it was a "typical" morning, but I tried making it special for her by taking her out on a quick trip last night to choose some treats to hand out at school today to help celebrate her birthday.  We went to Target. She chose rice krispie treats with little chocolate candies on top and a bag of Hershey's milk chocolate nuggets - enough for her class to each have one rice krispie treat and two nuggets.  We got milk on the way home and she helped me carry it all to the car.

We put the treats in little zip lock baggies and she wrote her classmates' names on the baggies.  She recalled the desk seating arrangement in her classroom so she wouldn't forget anybody.  We put four hershey's nuggets in Miss Oppman's bag.

This morning I made her a number 8 pancake to help make the morning a little more special than a normal day.  We plan to make her favorite mac n cheese for dinner tonight - and the official party will be on Saturday the 26th when we have more time to celebrate.  She really wants to go ice skating.

I'm enjoying Violet growing up!  She's developed a larger sense of responsibility and thoughtfulness.  She will initiate helping out with things like vacuuming and dishwashing.  She still changes clothes in the middle of the house and leaves things laying on the floor.  But her "growing up" personality is emerging and she's becoming quite the young little lady.

She went to a school friend's birthday party on Saturday the 18th at Chuck E Cheese and determined to win enough tickets so she could spend them to get prizes for Vanessa and Calvin.  She got a magic wand for Vanessa and a little cup of playdoh for Calvin to play with.  She got herself a big bag of cotton candy.  We were impressed by her thoughtfulness - just like the way she spent her Awana bucks to get everybody Christmas presents.

Vanessa and a typical morning

A few moments earlier we can hear bonking around upstairs.  She's probably woken up, turned on EVERY light she can find.  Her room, the bathroom, the hallway.  She leaves the lights on.  She comes downstairs and peeks around the corner to see the kitchen.  She's wearing her "bunny" pajamas and thinks she can hop hop hop and eat carrots.  Then she runs back upstairs, changes into nothing but underwear and a tutu, and dances and twirls around the kitchen like a little princess.  She says that princesses sing, and Calvin told her princesses don't sing, so she wanted to ask me to make sure she was right, that princesses in fact DO sing.  She is right.  :)
I poke her belly.  She responds, "My belly doesn't squeak!"

She always asks for oatmeal squares.  It is her favorite cereal right now, and doesn't seem to love Berry Kix like she used to.

After breakfast she asks, "Where are Violet and Calvin?"  I always respond, "They are at school."

She runs away to change into something else.  She leaves a trail of clothes behind her all day.  She puts on her princess dress up dress and then find a pile of toy dinosaurs and is now playing "family" with them.

Aunt Rachel and Violet's "play date"

A coupon was gifted to Violet at Christmas time from Rachel for an overnight playdate.  We picked a date that worked and she got to go last weekend, Saturday night, Jan 11th.  Violet packed her suitcase with a change of clothes for Sunday morning, pajamas, toothbrush, and saved a pretty dress to change into for when Rachel picked her up at 4:00pm.  She was so excited!  I don't know many details, but I know what they did.
Rachel took her to Pursuing Picasso to paint a mug and then they had pasta/meatballs at her house, then they went out to Culver's a split a mint chocolate shake which they were both too full to finish.  They got ready for bed, watched some cartoons before bed, spent a lot of time choosing an alarm clock ring tone, and got to sleep.  I think Violet slept in Rachel's bed with her. :) Violet wanted pancakes in the morning and Rachel made some then realized she had no syrup, so she gave her peanut butter and honey to top them with.
She brought Violet to BBC in the morning.  I am so glad they had a chance to connect.  It made me want to take Violet out on a date! :)

Violet and Calvin's (oh, and Vanessa's!) first experience "at the movies" seeing Frozen

After reading some good reviews and hearing good feedback from some friends of mine, I decided it would be really fun to take Violet and Calvin to their first "theater" experience to watch the movie Frozen.  It was a movie Rachel and I were interested in seeing as well so we decided to go tonight.
Just so happened Dave had started feeling pretty sick earlier in the day and was feeling rather yucky.  Flu symptoms and everything.  He decided to stay home so I put Eli in bed at 7:15 after bathing all the kids ~ and Rachel, Violet, Calvin, Vanessa and I went to the 7:45 showing at College Square.  I had originally intended on leaving Vanessa home but seeing Dave was not able to do anything, so we brought her along.

I kept "going to a movie" a surprise until we pulled into the parking lot.  I only told them we were going somewhere fun and new.  I waited until Rachel pulled up for me to tell them all together.  There was plenty of whooping and hollering in the parking lot when they found out they were going to get to see Frozen in the theater - of course, the movie ALL their friends seemed to be talking about at school.

They seemed perplexed that we had to pay for tickets and then not give them to anybody when we walked into the theater.

We treated them to popcorn and all shared a big Sierra Mist with two straws.  We found theater #7 and Calvin was wowed by the size of the screen.  Vanessa ate popcorn and sat on my lap for most of the movie.  She snuggled up to me after awhile and might have fallen asleep but she kept her attention on the movie too and seemed to like it.  She said it was "not too scarey".

The movie was super adorable.  Rachel and I were laughing at so many scenes!  Violet and Calvin were cracking up at the goofy little snowman who was funny among even the more tense scenes.  A few growling wolves and a big giant snowman monster who guarded the ice castle was about as scary as it got.  And the end wrapped up very nicely with a message about true love and sacrifice.  We all loved it!

two extra days of Christmas break

The last two days (Mon, Jan 6 and Tues, Jan 7) were supposed to have been the first two days of school starting up after Christmas break.  Because of the extreme cold temperatures hitting -19 and windchills way colder than that, school was called off.  I wasn't mentally prepared for those two days with all the kids alone so cabin fever hit us pretty bad.  Violet and I did manage to accomplish organizing the "crafty" area in the house yesterday - we pulled every coloring book, puzzle buzz magazine, marker, glue stick, pencil, eraser, craft, bead, book, you-name-it, out of the closet, threw away a TON of stuff that was written/scribbled on, and organized the drawers and two shelves.  They look much better and a ton of things that collected in the dining room was cleared off too.  And in the process they found a bunch of "new" things to do.

Over Christmas break the highlights were

- the cardboard slide
- Calvin's new hotwheels car race track.  He and Violet build cool stuff and they like to hook it up high on a bookshelf to race their cars down.  They named a bunch of their cars and my favorite its a made-up word they called "infloodable blue".
- T.A.P.E.  They love, love tape.  They "need" tape all the time.  Attaching things to things.  It drives me crazy.  I find tape in all parts of the house where tape shouldn't be.  But they love it and keeps them occupied for a long time.  Violet even wants her own roll for her birthday.
- the 1000 piece candy wrapper puzzle.  I let it sit done for about a week and just put it back in the box today.
- celebrating Calvin's 6th birthday
- spending New Year's with Shawn and Kim
- seeing my family all together on Christmas day and getting to "play" in the gym

Eli answered me

Yesterday I was trying to distract Eli to get him away from messing with Calvin's hotwheels track.  I brought Eli over to a different part of the house and built him a tiny track to put his cars down and while I was building it he kept walking away from me.  I said with more energy than normal when speaking to him by saying his name to call him back to me.  He stopped in his tracks, turned and looked at me, and with what seemed like annoyance, he answered "What!"  Turned the tense moment into a laughing one!  He's never answered me that directly before until today.  His usual response is "no".

last day of 2013 - New Year's Eve

We continued tradition again to wrap up the year 2013 with Shawn and Kim Thompson.  Shawn's parents were staying in a hotel in CF (Country Inn and Suites) and let us come and swim at the hotel pool on Monday night the 30th of December.  This made for a late night.  But it was such a fun treat to do this on a cold winter night!  As we swam we could see snow falling outside the windows.  Felt like we were in a snow globe.

Shawn and Kim both got in the water with their two kids, Caleb (3) and Genevieve (1) ~ (they refer to her as Jenny).  Violet and Calvin swam around like crazy (and when did Calvin learn to swim?) and Vanessa wore a life jacket and had enough confidence to swim with her jacket.  Eli was with me and splashed around.  He eventually got sick of the water and wanted to walk around.  I don't think we got out of the pool til 9:00.  I changed the kids into their PJs and they got to bed as soon as we got home.

On Dec 31, we slept in sorta late, had a late breakfast, I went grocery shopping for new year's snacks, and as a group, we had decided to meet at Panchero's for lunch with Shawn, Kim, Chuck and Carolyn (Shawn's parents).  Kim and I both had things to grab at Walmart so we got the kids settled at our house after lunch and the littles down for naps, and we got to go out together for a bit.  I had an errand to run to drop off our baby swing at Rachel's so she could take it down to Jay and Molly's for Theodore.  Kim came with me and I showed her where Rachel lives and works.  We made a run to Walmart for some random things.

Its always nice to see Shawn and Kim.  They are an encouragement to us like we are to them.  We talk about parenting, life, God, and have fun together.  We play games, eat lots of food, and prayed together to bring in the new year.  We had a funny moment trying to find the ball drop on our roku TV player.  We thought we were tuned in to a local news channel but it wasn't right so we missed the moment.  Dave looked at his phone and it said 12:02 and he was like "oh, its 2014" or something like that, and we just shrugged, toasted our champagne glasses, and laughed.

The next morning we had egg/ham muffin bakes, donut muffins (yum!), and lots of coffee.  Kids played around and S&K left about 11:15 to meet Chuck and Carolyn for lunch at Red Lobster.

finished the 1000 piece candy wrapper puzzle

On New Year's Day the puzzle got finished.  This was a Christmas present so it got opened the day after and worked on daily over Christmas break.  I think Violet completed well over half of it.  I helped her but she loooooved putting pieces together!  Calvin helped a lot too but he has less of an attention span for such concentration.

It was a fun puzzle to work on because it was as if we were putting together a whole bunch of individual puzzles and then putting them together.
