Another little sewing project: a pink snuggly crib sheet for Vanessa

This was my first attempt at making a crib sheet.  I used this tutorial here:

http://www.dana-made-it.com/2008/07/tutorial-crib-and-toddler-bed-sheets.html

And it turned out really cute!  This is my first "girly" bedding.  Violet had yellow with brown monkeys (gender neutral since we didn't know she was a girl), Calvin was gifted some nice boy bedding, and up until now, Vanessa was sleeping in the "boy" crib.  So I decided it was definitely time for some pink while she's got a few months left in the crib.

20 weeks already! This baby is half-baked.

Snapped a belly pic!

Calvin's 4th birthday

The day after Christmas I gave Calvin a hair cut.  He looked much more "grown up boy" with short hair.

This is also the LAST paper chain link left of the very long paper chain that was up on the wall that represented how many days until his birthday.

I could sum up Calvin's birthday with one word: Chocolate!  The boy loves, loves chocolate.  He ate the entirety of his reeses peanut butter cups from his Christmas stocking in 2 days...and requested many chocolate items for his birthday.

We started the day with chocolate chip pancakes!

My dad (Grandpa Jon!) came down to spend the day with us to help celebrate Calvin's birthday.  He brought along a very fun bouquet of helium balloons for him.  That was a huge hit!  Calvin and Violet talked to their cousins on Skype (first Austin, Renee and Wesley), then Kristina, Anja and Emma.  They wanted to wish him a happy birthday which was very sweet.  He enjoyed showing them some of his Christmas presents.  Rachel helped them with that while my dad and I decorated the chocolate cake Calvin requested.  He even wanted the cake to have chocolate chips, chocolate frosting, chocolate sprinkles, to be served along with chocolate ice cream and chocolate milk!

Rachel had to leave that morning to head to another orthodontist's office in Mason City so she gave Calvin his present before she left.  A remote control monster truck!  We had to charge the batteries for 8 hours before he could use it though.

We got out of the house for awhile and took the kids to KT's Inflatable Indoor Park for a couple hours.  They jumped and bounced their little selves to the point of sweating.  They LOVED it!  Vanessa enjoyed herself too, playing with all the 1 yr old toys in the corner.  I took a few pics, then Dave stayed with them to bounce while my dad and I walked around the mall.

After that fun but exhausting outing, we made a quick shopping run to Kitchen Essentials so dad could look for a set of stainless steel measuring spoons for my mom.  We ran across a nice kitchen mat also which is something I'd been looking for since standing on the tile by the stove sometimes makes my legs hurt.  We found what we were looking for, and headed home.  My dad read the kids books for over an hour, which they really enjoyed.  It was a perfect relaxing activity to occupy them while I got supper ready.  Calvin requested chicken and broccoli for supper, so that's what we had, along with potatoes.  After supper we lit the candles on his cake, sang him happy birthday, and ate more chocolate in one sitting than I probably have in a long time.  He opened his four birthday presents, and his favorite by far was the dinosaur figurines.  Besides the balloons, got a little pair of army men from Violet (she got them at her school and thought of him, what a sweetie), a Cars water bottle, dinosaur figurines, and a Digger Man book from Grandma Martha.

We love our little boy!  I can still call him little, right? :)

Christmas 2011

Here's a weekend recap, if I think of more details I'll add them later.

Friday (23rd):
- Friday before Christmas Dave had the day off, we traveled to Mason City, everyone in our family got our teeth cleaned at my dad's office at 2 pm.  Vanessa screamed, Calvin and Violet did great, no cavities for anybody.  Rachel had flown in to MSP Thursday late and drove to MC with a rental car.  She met us at dad's office so she could help watch the kids while we were unable to.  Calvin decided to be brave and went first with Dave.
- Got done with teeth by 4 pm, went back to my parent's house after a quick stop at Farm and Fleet to get a blow torch thing which was on sale.  My mom had prepared a lasagna, garlic bread, broccoli and klondike mint chip bars for dessert.  Supper was good, kids played before supper with blocks, coloring books, reading books, etc.  We left shortly after supper, got kids to bed right when we got home.

Pics from Friday (thanks Rachel for taking pics!):

Saturday (24th):

The morning was really fun.  We woke up and got ready quickly, and decided to have breakfast at the HyVee deli and get the kids donuts and pancakes.  After a yummy breakfast (V and C got chocolate frosted cake donuts, Vanessa ate a glazed) of pancakes, sausage and eggs, we shopped HyVee for food on the list.  The grocery store was busy, as I expected.  I had to pick up ingredients for all sorts of things.  Saturday was spent mostly in the kitchen!  Rachel drove down to our house and arrived late morning and brought along a yummy Starbuck's for Dave and I.  She got right to work with me in the kitchen preparing things for Christmas.  We made 2 gingerbread houses from scratch (still to be decorated, we didn't have time to do them on Christmas day), a big batch of italian sausage tortellini soup, a double recipe of frozen slush punch, baked a brownie from scratch for the bottom layer of the baked alaska dessert, and formed the ice cream layers of the baked alaska in a mixing bowl.

Violet went with Dave on a last minute shopping trip to fill my stocking and were gone for a few hours, and Calvin & Vanessa took naps for a couple hours while Rachel and I were in the kitchen.  It was more challenging to work when the kids woke up, but we still got everything done.  Despite all the cooking, we hadn't prepared anything for dinner, so Dave ordered two Godfather's Pizza for delivery.  As we were eating, I noticed a long black hair baked into one of the pizza slices (gag), so Dave called to tell Godfather's about it, so they immediately baked a new one and delivered it quickly.  We had already eaten enough of the second pizza so that extra free pizza (with no hair!) was saved for later meals.

That night after the kids went to bed, Rachel, Dave and I spent many hours wrapping presents and Dave worked on preparing a dessert for Christmas dinner.  He ended up staying up super late because he didn't realize the recipe called for a 2 hour bake time, and he had started preparing the dessert around 11 pm.  We also put all the presents under the tree.

Saturday pics:

We had to get creative with the extra meringue. :D

Sunday (Christmas!):

We woke up around 7:30.  We instructed the kids NOT to go downstairs, they had to wait til we were ready.  We let them open up their stockings in the morning, but had to wait on the presents til after Christmas lunch was over.  They got slinkys, candy, toy cars, light up toys, and other little stuff.  Calvin got a chocolate ornament from Aunt Rachel and wanted to eat it so that was part of his breakfast.

I put the ham (the one from Oscar's Smokehouse in NY that Rachel sent to us!) in the oven at 10 am.  We went to Bethany Bible Chapel from 10:30-11:30.  That hour was a combination of music, a message, and breaking bread.  I can't remember the last time Christmas was on a Sunday, it was a great change of pace and I enjoyed going that morning as a way to set aside time to remember Christ's birth and keep Him in my mind throughout the day.  Our kids got snuggly at church.

We got home to a delicious smelling house!  That hour and a half from the time that we got home to the time that everyone arrived was a bit tough...the kids were ITCHING to open gifts, but we had to wait, so we let them watch a movie in the basement.  Meanwhile, my parents arrived at 12:30, then Jay and Molly came around 1:30.  My mom brought green beans, roasted almond, and some dinner rolls.  Molly brought a cheesy potato casserole, mixed fruit, and broccoli salad.  Rachel provided 3 different kids of wine, and Dave and I heated up the ham and sliced it, and put together the slushy fruity punch.  We all sampled the persimmon pudding with with cream glaze that Dave created the night (or morning) before.  The meal was delicious!

THEN finally it was time to open presents. We all pitched in to clean up the kitchen to a satisfactory level and then sat in the living room. Dave and Violet started out handing out presents. It took us just over 2 hours to get through present opening, and the kids (Vanessa slept through most of it) were happy to help hand out presents and also couldn't wait to open theirs. Calvin and Violet got a lot of fun things (scooters, a toy airplane with a remote control to drive along the ground with sound effects, toy cars, arts and craft things, markers, games, sledding tubes, cardboard castle to decorate). Vanessa got a toy pig with four coins from Jay and Molly that go in the top slot that she played with for a long time. Dave got me a camera that I've wanted for a long time, a slimmer camera with a zip up padded case I can carry around with me easier. One of the funnier moments was when Rachel opened a up a present, she looked confused when she opened it and found a pair of men's lifting gloves. Dave looked a bit embarassed and said "Oops! Those were supposed to go to Jon, maybe I should lay off the straight whiskey next time I'm wrapping presents!"

We spent so much time opening gifts and cleaning up, that we didn't have time for the gingerbread house decorating like we had planned on.  We heated up the two soups (mom brought creamy turkey and rice, I made italian sausage tortellini) and Dave grilled the cheese bread and we ate around 8:00 pm.  The showcase for the night was serving the baked alaska dessert that Rachel created.  We had put the meringue on it earlier in the day, and pulled it out of the freezer to serve after the soup.  Dave poured over the top some rum and we lit it on fire for fun.  It flamed up for about 30 seconds, and the smoke set off the fire alarms in the house!  Everybody had a slice of the dessert, then we settled back into the living room to play a couple games, the kids ran around like crazy monkeys playing with all their new stuff, but eventually crashed around 9:45 pm.  My dad read them some stories, Dave and I put them to bed rather easily, they had just had a very busy fun day and I could tell they were very, very tired.  My mom and dad stayed til about 11 pm.  Jay and Molly and Rachel stayed overnight, we stayed up a little later playing a few more games.  I fell asleep on the couch in the middle of Jay acting out something in the game of charades around 1 am.

Jay and Molly stuck around long enough in the morning to fill some to-go cups full of coffee and cups of yogurt for the road.  They had Christmas lunch plans with her family and wanted to get home and prepare for that.

Calvin's power

Today, Maria and Vanessa were napping, Violet was at school, I was working and Calvin was booored.  I had a big pile of paper that needed shredding in my office, so I enlisted his help.  He informed me that he was mighty and had power and therefore could handle the work.  I got him started and then scooted back into my desk to get back to my work day, sure that Calvin would be occupied for the next half hour.  About 3 minutes in, Calvin called out for some help.  I turned around and asked what he needed help with, since the machine wasn't jammed or anything.  He just pointed his little finger at the stack of papers, indicating that he wanted help shredding the paper.  I reminded him that he was mighty and had lots of power.  He looked at me, with 100% sincerity, and softly said, "Dad...my power is almost gone."  I guess even mighty superheros run out of power sometimes.  :)  So, I helped him finish and we high-fived.

Violet knows about ISBN numbers

Violet learned at school that she can locate any book via the ISBN number.   She she found a library book at school she wants and wrote it down for me, and is asking for it for her birthday.  :)  smart girl!

Dave has strep throat, not the flu

Dave has been sick since the day we left Milwaukee.  His throat started hurting, then he started getting the chills and body aches.  No puking through.  He is miserable, taking whatever he can to push off feeling the awful symptoms of the flu.  He is either freezing cold to the core (wearing hats and mittens in the house!) to feeling burning hot, and taking his shirt off.  I told him to go to the doctor tomorrow...we'll see if he takes my suggestion.  He's pretty miserable though, not able to do much.

update....he doesn't have the flu.  He saw his doc today and a test for strep came back positive.  He has a Rx for penicillin and some strong pain meds to help the throat pain go away so he can function.

BBC Christmas Program - Dec 18, 2011

Just in case we hadn't had enough Christmas programs....there is a third.  I suppose that is what happens when we have two kids enrolled in two different Christian schools.  Our church also has one they put together with all the children involved.  They've been practicing for weeks during some portion of Sunday School on Sundays since after Thanksgiving.

Violet and the other K kids were the stable animals, and there wasn't much of a costume other than hats with ears.  They were floppy and cute though.  Violet was insistent that she match her costume hat (she knew it was a brown spotted cow) and requested to wear her brown dress tonight to look like a cow.  I had planned on her wearing her red Christmas dress, but I wasn't going to crush her hopes.  And plus, the brown dress is adorable too.

Violet was on stage the whole time sitting as an animal and sang every song she knew.  Calvin got to go up front with his 3 yr old class and sing two songs, Away in a Manger and Happy Birthday Lord.  Both kids did really well, sang what they knew, and smiled a lot.  They enjoyed cookies and juice afterwards.

Grandpa Jon came down by my last minute text to tell him what was going on, and he agreed to hang out, watch the show, and stay after for a few minutes.  It was great to see him and we appreciate his effort to come down to see the program despite his busy Sunday activities/responsibilities.

Baby #4's gender is a ....

BOY!

This is the first pregnancy that we've decided to find out the gender via ultrasound scan instead of waiting til birth to find out.  Since this is the last LaMarche child of ours, we thought it would be nice to do something different, and also...we both felt a pull and a tug to just "know".  To get things more ready this time.

We are soooo excited and happy about this little baby boy who will join our family.  Brings our numbers to an even 2 girls and 2 boys.  Thank you Lord for this new blessing!

Recent events in the month of December

I feel like I'm really behind on blogging, and don't have enough time right now to give it the time and attention I want to, but I also know that if I don't do what I can right now, it will never get done and I'll forget even more about the events.  There's a lot coming up too! (Christmas and Calvin's 4th bday) Our family has been on the road lately, have two sick people (Violet has strep and Dave has the flu), and every time those two things happen, all the basic, necessary things that I have to do like cooking/shopping/house cleaning/child care/laundry get behind and all I can do in my free time is "catch up" with life and not get ahead of it.  Anyway....here goes.

Violet's christmas program at WCS (Thurs, Dec 8, 2011)

Violet participated in her first school-related Christmas program.  Her entire kindergarten class dressed up like lambs.  The costumes looked like zip up fleece pajamas with hoods and lamb ears attached.  The entire music program was featured.  The band played, the classes all participated, the choir sang songs, and there was a storyline that followed the entire play with two angels named "Lo" and "Behold" narrating the whole story of the birth of Christ.  Violet and her K class sang some songs, and one particularly cute part was when they all said "Baaaaaa" like a lamb at the end of a song, made everyone laugh.  Dave and I sat in the balcony with Calvin and Vanessa, and kept them corraled in different parts of it as the long evening went on.  After Violet's part was over, her class changed out of their costumes and sat and watched the rest of the program.  She sat with Mrs. Speed and seemed to enjoy all the music.  Calvin and Vanessa were super bored, but I kept them somewhat entertained with snacks/drinks.  After the program, we went to her K classroom for a few minutes while she said goodbye to all her friends.  She was super excited and was goofing around with her friends, Emily even picked her up with a big hug!  We decided that since we hadn't had supper that night, we'd go out and celebrate (there was an option to go to the school gym and have sweets and coffee, but we decided to avoid it), so we went out to eat at the Hwy 63 diner.  Violet was pretty happy to order macaroni and cheese.  V and C colored on paper with crayons.  At one point in the evening, Calvin playfully collapsed on the bench of the booth where our family was sitting and said in an exhausted voice, "Daaaaad, I'm soooo tired, I want to go to bed!"  That little boy never fights bedtime.  He is the first to fall asleep after we tuck them in.  We finished up our salads, broasted chicken (yum) and veggies and headed home...and the late night turned out to be very late.  All the kids were in bed by 10 pm.  And she still had to go to school on Friday.

Trip to Milwaukee to see Dave's dad (December 12-13, 2011)

We found out a couple weeks ago that Dave's dad was scheduled to have surgery done to remove a benign tumor on his left shoulder/neck.  The medical team located near where he lives in the UP of Michigan who originally operated on it a few months ago cut him open only to find a situation that was too complicated for them to handle.  They sewed him up and decided to refer him to Milwaukee.  It is a blessing for them that he is officially employed somewhere, because he now has medical insurance that is helping him pay for a lot of this medical care.  Since Milwaukee is only 4 hrs away, Dave decided it would be worth it to make the trip to the hospital and visit him, and also be with his wife Cindy as he was in surgery for a few hours.  Ted was really worried that she would worry herself into a tizzy so he was glad that we planned to spend time with her.  We made the decision to leave for Milwaukee last minute, and pulled both kids from a day of school to make the trip happen.  We left Monday evening at 7 pm, and drive into the night arriving at a hotel (Hampton Inn) near the hospital around midnight.  Surpringly, the transfer of sleeping kids from the van to the hotel room went smoothly.  They had set up a portable crib already, so Vanessa went right back to sleep, I suppose it felt good to sleep on her tummy like she prefers instead of laying back in a car seat.  I could tell Violet and Calvin were relieved to lay down on a soft comfy bed, they used the bathroom and crawled into bed with out much fuss either.  They are really turning into flexible kids and great travelers - they know the drill with elevators in hotels, hotel key cards, and whispering in a hotel room at night so Vanessa doesn't wake up.  The night was quiet, Praise the Lord, everyone felt decently rested when we woke up at 7:30 am.  Ted's surgery that was originally scheduled for 1pm was bumped back an hour to 2 pm, so he and Cindy decided they had a little extra time in the morning to visit.  We all got ready, ate breakfast at the hotel, and left to go see them at the housing place where they were staying.  It was a place called "Kathy's House".  They had a huge basement with a gigantic play room with lots of toys, our kids devoured the room, scrambling for every little thing that grabbed their attention.  Cindy met us first, Ted came down later to visit.  He couldn't make physical contact with us since he had showered with this special antibacterial stuff the hospital had given him to use with strict instructions to not touch anybody.

We then drove to the hospital so he could check in, and get the preparation process started. Then began the.longest.day.EVER....that I've spent in a waiting area of a hospital with children. Once Ted was back in prep, Cindy hung out with us and did what we did...we couldn't leave the hospital because Cindy was equipped with a pager that would notify her of updates on Ted's progress and it only worked in the hospital territory. I didn't want to leave and go somewhere else with the kids because i didn't want to have all 3 of them alone in a strange city that I didn't know and preferred to stay together as a family....so we stuck it out a the hospital. This was an ENORMOUS medical facility. Many buildings that spanned many blocks. There was nothing for kids to do. No child play area either. There was a fish tank that occupied their brains for a few minutes at a time, and a little play table with sand and cars in it that operated by magnets connected to the under side of the table. I had brought along some crayons/coloring pages for them, which kept them busy for a little while...but other than those 3 things, they were bored out of their minds. I did take a break to go sit in the van with them so V and C could watch a movie and Vanessa took a nap in her car seat. Dave stayed inside with Cindy. When Vanessa woke up we had lunch in the cafeteria. We walked down long mile-long hallways. The hours ticked by slowly. Even though it wasn't the ideal place to be, we tried to make fun of it, stay light hearted, and avoid grumpiness, because that would have only made things worse. From 11:30 am to 7:30 pm we plodded along, waited for him to be done with surgery, then waited for him to finish the hour of "after surgery recovery", then waited for him to be transported to a room for the night.

V and C tried barracading Vanessa out of their way but she crawled right under the chairs, much to their dismay.  They played puppies in their little area and begged me to be the zookeeper and they pretended to be zoo animals.  I don't even know how to pretend to be a zookeeper.
Vanessa's favorite "toy" was a pair of Violet's earmuffs.

A receptionist who noticed that we'd been waiting for hours offered our kids some graham crackers and apple juice.  Violet got to go back with her and help carry out the snacks.  She told the receptionist all the kid's names and how to spell them, as the names were written on each white syrofoam cup.  We thought that was a sweet gesture.

Finally we went up to see him, and he had come through the tumor removal very well.  He also had some calcium deposit lumps on his head removed.

Cindy was in pretty good spirits the whole time, she didn't seem nervous, and seemed to enjoy our company.  Dave prayed with her before the surgery.

We talked to him in his hospital room for about 15 minutes, then decided to leave, since we had to drive home that night too.  Ted now says he has no memory of our visit after his surgery, he must have been drugged up too much to remember.

Dave said it was great to see him, it had been 3 yrs since their last visit, and 4 yrs since my last visit with them.  Calvin was a month old last time we visited them at their place in Michigan.  He was glad to see Vanessa, and hear the news of our new baby arriving in May.

We made last stops in the bathroom before exiting the hospital.  Got the kids to the van, changed into their pajamas, and settled in for the drive.  Vanessa and Calvin fell asleep immediately.  Neither had eaten supper, so we tried getting food right away, but neither would wake up to eat.  Violet, Dave and I were awake enough to have a cheeseburger.  The drive home felt longer than the drive there.  Dave and I were both exhausted by the length of the day and how taxing it had been with the boredom and waiting.  I snoozed a little on the way home, woke up a little, Dave drove the whole way, but the last 45 minutes he kept slapping his face and shaking around to keep himself awake.  A super late night...but the transfers to bed were completely silent.  We carried 3 sleeping kids to bed at 1:00 am and none made a peep.  I am pretty sure Dave and I were both asleep in our bed by 1:05 am.

Calvin's Christmas Program at Orchard Hill Church Preschool (Wednesday, December 14th, 2011)

Calvin participated in his first Christmas program at Orchard Hill Church along with all the other preschool kids who go there.  Four preschool groups were combined and practiced the same songs to perform for the short 40 minute show.  Even though he had missed the day of preschool prior to the show (We were in Milwaukee visiting Dave's dad in the hospital), they had been rehearsing the songs since right after Thankgiving.  I then heard the entirety of the songs that Calvin had been singing at home here and there, wondering where he had picked the new songs up.  He walked in with his class holding little lights.  They sang "Silent Night", "Come On, Ring those Bells", "Away in a Manger", and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas".  Calvin seemed to know most of the words and the motions (which has has referred to as "oceans" for awhile now).  He smiled, seemed confident up there, but also goofed around with his friends standing right next to him, and when he caught sight of us in the crowd, excitedly waved and smiled at us.  Socially, he is either on or off, either super chatty, or very quiet.  Tonight was a chatty smiley night.  We also had the option to stay afterwards and enjoy cookies/punch with everybody, but the crowd and the fact that Violet was on the edge of getting really sick was enough for us to make the decision to sneak out the side door right when it was over, and skip out on the treats.  The program started at 6:30, and we drove away at 7:10pm, not bad!  It helps that we live only a couple blocks away.  The kids were all in bed by 8 pm.  Calvin did great.  Violet remembered performing in the Christmas program when she was in preschool, and acted like a proud big sister, and said "Calvin looks so cute!" with giggles when he was on stage.

When he saw us he happily waved!
Took Calvin's pic, but Violet had to sneak her face in!

Violet has strep throat

I don't know where she picked it up (Milwaukee hospital maybe!), but she had been complaining about her stomach hurting off and on last week.  Then she started coughing, and then the last straw that made me take her to the doctor was losing her voice.  The strep test came back positive with in 5 minutes, so the doc prescribed some amoxicillin and suggested ibuprofen to help her with the pain.  She was diagnosed last week Thursday.  Its Sunday, and she's still coughing a little, but has no pain and should be ready for school tomorrow.  She did not go to school last week Friday.
